Northern Tier Multi-Day Options

Route 6: A Panoramic Pennsylvania Passage, Scranton to Erie & Jamestown

 “One of America’s most scenic drives” - National Geographic.

 
Route 6, known as the Grand Army of the Republican Highway, runs through PA’s scenic northern tier offering many treasures along the way. Learn more about the highway which travels from Cape Cod, MA to Long Beach, CA including 400 miles in PA. On this tour we offer wonderful diversions along 300 miles on and off the highway including historic towns, scenic mountain views, quirky sites and more! Choose your favorites from the activities and sites below so we can customize the tour to meet your needs including how many days you'd like to spend along this special byway!

PA Grand Canyon

n     At the eastern end of PA Route 6 you may visit Scranton, home to the Steamtown National Historic Site, then travel westward perhaps visiting the Bradford Heritage Village & Museum where you'll enjoy a flax-spinning demo, see a historic sugar shack, and a "children's church" plus more than 40 carriages and wagons in the Carriage House, browse among hundreds of farm and home implements from yesteryear, and tour a stage coach inn.

n    Along the central portion of Route 6 you'll want to explore Victorian Wellsboro with its quaint gas street lights plus sites such as the Highland Chocolate Factory and the PA Grand Canyon Overlook. A great way to experience the area’s magnificent scenery is to travel on covered wagon rides into the PA Grand Canyon’s Upper Gorge, and/or aboard the Tioga Central Railroad.

n    Farther to the west in Sabinsville you may tour Patterson Farms, PA's largest maple production farm, and perhaps enjoy a deluxe sit-down tasting including maple creams, syrups and sugars with pancakes and ham! Or learn about the area's lumber heritage during a tour of the PA Lumber Museum offering outdoor logging camp buildings and indoor displays on the 19th-century logging boom and the Civilian Conservation Corps.

n     Near Kane you may visit the Kinzua Bridge State Park for wonderful views of the Kinzua Gorge and remains of the Kinzua Viaduct, an engineering marvel that spanned 2,053 feet across the gorge and was billed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” A tornado heavily damaged the structure in the early 21st century as you’ll learn from a park guide who will show a short video and offer insight as you enjoy views of the gorge and remaining viaduct structure.

n     In nearby Bradford you’ll be able tour the Zippo/Case Museum and Visitors Center where a historian tells the story of these products and you enjoy exhibits including a WWII Tribute, an American flag made of lighters, and rare collectibles. Plus tour the Eldred World War II Museum which honors the 1,500 area residents, many of them women, who worked in a munitions plant here during WWII that produced eight million bombs, mortar shells and fuses. You may also include a visit to the newly opened Seneca Casino nearby.

n    Heading to the very western end of Route 6 North, visit Erie which offers a Lake Erie boat cruise, Maritime Museum and U.S. Brig Niagara, Presque Isle, Presque Isle Downs & Casino, lighthouse tour. Not far away in Jamestown, NY, the hometown of Lucille Ball, you can also visit the Lucy-Desi Museum and Desilu Playhouse plus dine in the Tropicana Room. 

n    Accommodations for this tour usually include one to three nights at the Penn Wells Lodge in downtown Wellsboro or at the Comfort Inn in nearby Mansfield, one night at the Best Western Bradford Inn and one to three nights in Erie.

Majestic Mountain Treasures, 2 Days, Bradford Area

 Let us introduce you to some favorite new sites!

n    Visit the Appalachian Arts Studio, in Ridgeway, PA, which is home to chainsaw carvers, potters, printmakers and more! If you wish, have the opportunity to get your hands dirty throwing clay.

n    Explore the Seneca-Iroquois Museum and Seneca Allegany Casino, in Salamanca, NY.

n    Tour the Eldred WWII Museum honoring those who worked round the clock in a local munitions plant as well as service heroes. 

n    Marvel at the Kinzua Overlook with a new glass-bottomed Skywalk opening in the fall of 2010 for majestic mountain views!

n    Plus perhaps visit BWP Bats in Brooksville, PA to see how local hardwood makes some of the best baseball bats in the world.


PA Grand Canyon, Corning and Finger Lakes & Fun, 3 Days, Wellsboro/Sabinsville & Corning/ Finger Lakes Area

Covered Wagon Rides, Train Excursion, Wineries & more!

 n    Visit the Corning Museum of Glass and the Rockwell Museum of Western Art plus enjoy time exploring Corning's Historic Gaffer District downtown.

n    Learn why the Finger Lakes Region is famous for its wines and enjoy tastings at two or more popular wineries.

n    Enjoy a train ride, covered wagon rides and great views of the PA Grand Canyon Overlook in the Wellsboro area. 

n    If time permits we can also include a visit to the Glenn Curtiss Museum or Soaring Museum to learn about aviation history.

n    Accommodations provided at the Hampton Inn, Corning/Painted Post.

   Gorgeous View

 PA Grand Canyon Rails & Trails, 2 Days, Wellsboro Area

 Covered wagons, train ride and scenic views!

We'll keep you moving on this fun-filled overnight!

n    Enjoy covered wagon rides into the PA Grand Canyon's Upper Gorge and along Pine Creek on what was once an Indian path, then a railroad line. The railroad tracks have been removed with this creek-side trail now used for covered wagon rides. 

n   Ride the rails aboard the Tioga Central Railroad from Wellsboro Junction to Hammond Lake and return with lunch or dinner option.

n   Visit the PA Grand Canyon, plus if time allows, tour Highland Chocolates, an artisan chocolate workshop, or perhaps Patterson's Maple Farm, the largest in the state!

n     Accommodation options include the Penn Wells Lodge in Wellsboro or Comfort Inn in Mansfield.

n     Make this a three-day tour by including sites in Corning such as Corning Museum of Glass, the Rockwell Museum of Western Art and the city's historic "Gaffer's District."

Living the "Wild Life" in PA , 2+ Days, Northwest PA

PA's wild elk & Punxsutawney Phil!

The new premier elk watching and education center near Benezette is truly a site not to be missed! This beautiful “green” building, situated on 245 acres, features grand architecture,indoor and outdoor elk viewing areas, multimedia theatre, and interpretive exhibits to immerse visitors in the sights, sounds and smells of the natural world of the elk and native wildlife. We’ll plan your visit for dusk for the best opportunity to view elk and may also include a dinner picnic with a cowboy poet or storyteller! Additionally the tour will include:

n    Tour the Appalachian Arts Studio to see a chainsaw carving come to life.

n   Visit with PA’s most famous weather forecaster, Punxsutawney Phil, plus  try out to be a TV weather personality by standing in front of a green screen and reading from a script while seeing what you look like on TV at the Weather Discovery CenterPrizes will be awarded for the best performances! 

n    Additional options include tour of Straub’s Brewery which produces Groundhog Brew and chance to enjoy its “everlasting tap”, winery, museum of vintage automobiles and trophy game, the Jimmy Stewart Museum in Indiana where this great actor’s trademark grey cowboy hat is on display from his days as a wild west movie star.

For an extended “wild life” experience taking in more of PA we can tour State College and Penn State University which is home to the famous Nittany Lions and a wonderful All-Sports Museum as well as visit Penn’s Cave, America’s only all-water cavern which can be toured by boat plus wildlife park toured by bus. Depending on your direction of travel a bit farther east we have T&D’s Cats of the World, an animal refuge specializing in exotic felines (including some “movie stars”) and wildlife.


Best of the Valley & Mountains, 3 Days, Lewisburg/Williamsport/Wellsboro

From flatlanders to ridgerunners!

Learn about the people that made this area the lumber capitol of the world in the 1800’s, from the mountain “ridgerunners” who timbered the forests to the valley “flatlanders” including mill workers and lumber barons.

n  Enjoy views of the PA Grand Canyon now lush again after being stripped of its timber in the mid-1800’s, plus the adventure of covered wagon rides and/or a train excursion!

n  Select from Williamsport area activities including Susquehanna River cruise, Millionaires’ Row Tour with visits to one or more of the architectural masterpieces that made it famous, gourmet dining in a historic lumber mansion and/or at Le Jeune Chef where the chefs of tomorrow are being trained while studying at Penn College’s culinary school, tour of the Taber Museum or Sones Farm Museum.

This tour includes highlights from Erie to Wellsboro along scenic Route 6, then south on Route 15 to Williamsport and Lewisburg to include highlights from our Best of the Valley & Mountains Tour detailed above, then west on Route 80 for our Living the "Wild Life" Tour also detailed above. Lumberjacks, Sugar Shacks & Train Tracks Overnight, 2 Days, Wellsboro area

 A great variety of sites!

Our costumed "lumberjack" leads the way to - 

n  Train excursion aboard the Tioga Central Railroad.

n  PA's largest maple sugaring farm for tour and optional deluxe sit-down tasting.  

n   Visit to the Bradford Farm Museum and Historic Village in Troy featuring a historic sugar shack, collection of farm and home antiques, flax spinning demo, stage coach inn, children's church and carriage house repository, or the PA Lumber Museum in Galeton offering an intro video and indoor displays focusing on local timbering and the Civilian Conservation Corp. as well as outdoor lumber camp buildings and a logging locomotive.

 Lucy's Jamestown & Erie's Lake, 2 Days, Erie & Jamestown
City highlights and casino.
n    You'll find plenty to love on this overnight adventure including time in Jamestown, the hometown of Lucille Ball, plus activities in Erie. In Jamestown you'll vist the Lucy-Desi Museum dedicated to Lucy's life and television fame plus enjoy an "Eat-Like Lucy" spaghetti luncheon in the Tropicana and a driving tour of the city.  In Erie you'll visit the Erie Maritime Museum, visit the Tom Ridge Environmental Center on Presque Isle featuring a short video, displays and glass lighthouse for great views and enjoy a driving tour of Presque Isle including stop at a historic lighthouse and the Perry Monument. Plus an optional evening at Presque Isle Downs Casino in Erie.

     Try a Lucy & Ethel Girlfriend Getaway variation with Jamestown's Lucy sites, a winery or two (remember Lucy stomping grapes?) and a candy store (remember the candy factory episode?), plus a lunch cruise and casino.

n     In Jamestown, highlights include Luci-Desi Museum plus the Desilu Playhouse and we can also include sites along the Chatauqua-Lake Erie Wine Trail upon request.
n     In Erie, highlights include Erie Maritime Museum, cruise aboard the Victorian Princess on Presque Isle Bay plus additional options such as a visit to the Presque Isle Downs and the Erie or Seneca Allegany Casino in Salamanca, NY just over the New York border from Bradford.
n     In Bradford area, highlights include  Eldred WWII Museum, where you'll learn about area residents, who worked at a local munitions plant, and General Mitchell Page, a medal of honor recipient, Zippo/Case Museum home to an American flag made of over 3,000 lighters plus visit the Kinzua Overlook.

 Options available May through October to include the Erie boat cruise.


PA Poker Run, 4 Days, Troy/ Wellsboro & Bradford
A seven-card-stud sojourn!

        Hit the road enjoying the great sites of PA's northern tier including two casinos, plus play a hand of seven card stud as you travel! A favorite pastime of motorcycle enthusiasts, poker runs involve stopping at sites on a predetermined route collecting cards along the way with the object being to have the best poker hand at the end of the run. We've chosen to explore a part of historic Route 6, one of Harley-Davidson's top rated scenic touring routes, for our version traveling from Wilkes-Barre to Bradford.

n     Visit Mohegan Sun Casino and Seneca Allegany Casino, Steamtown National Historic Site, the PA Grand Canyon, PA Lumber Museum, the state's largest maple farm, and the Eldred WWII Museum, plus include a train or covered wagon ride. At seven of the sites we'll deal everyone a playing card and at the end award a grand prize and two runner up prizes for the people with the highest hands! Traditionally poker runs are fundraising events so if you're game make this tour a special fundraising event for your favorite cause.

    Enjoy a tasting spree through PA. You decide how much of the state you want your taste buds to explore, then we'll design the package to meet your needs. Here are some of the options:
n  In the northern tier consider visits to PA's largest maple sugaring farm for tour and perhaps a delxe sit-down tasting with ham, pancakes and plenty of maple toppings, an apiary featured on "Good Morning America" where you'll learn about bee-hive colonies and covered wagon rides. Also available is our Wellsboro Backwards Luncheon starting at an artisan chocolate factory for a tour and dessert, and ending with a train ride for great scenery and butlered appetizers.
n  In central PA visit a winery or two, enjoy a chef demo at a local restaurant or a cooking class demo at a culinary arts school where you can also dine, tour a candy factory and treat yourself to Penn Dutch specialties as part of a meal or to take home during a visit to a weekly Farmers Market or a Penn Dutch dry goods store. We can add in our Recipe Roulette Tour, for a bit of mystery!
n  Offerings in south-central PA include tours of a potato chip factory, candy factory and winery plus the opportunity to enjoy another backwards luncheon, our Do The Twist Tour, which focuses on foods from the 50's and includes a twist dance contest and a hoola hoop competition.

n   One-day tour includes festival, optional tickets to a holiday theatre matinee plus optional dinner.
