ATTRACTIONS

}  A.R.T. Sculpture Design & Fabrication Studio, Lancaster County—Visit the largest fine art foundry on the East Coast and see how art is created from beginning to end. Watch the sculpture being created by master artisans, see historic pieces being restored to their original luster plus tour the sculpture garden and gaze into the Koi pond. Current and recent projects include statues for the Dr. Seuss Memorial Park in Springfield, MA, the New York Times Capsule at the American Museum of Natural History, the Wilt Chamberlain Memorial for Philadelphia, and restoration of the lamps and fountains on Capitol Hill.

}  Capitol Building, Harrisburg—Dedicated in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt who called the building “the most beautiful state Capitol in the nation”, this site is a must-see when visiting Harrisburg. Learn about the building’s architectural highlights including the 26,000-ton dome modeled after that of St. Peter’s in Rome and the Italian marble staircase which is a copy of the grand staircase of the Paris Opera House.

}  The Doll House Museum, Harrisburg—This site houses a collection of over 5,000 dolls displayed in theme rooms, including antique dolls from 1825, fairy tale and dress-up dolls, advertisement dolls and novelties, Gone With The Wind dolls and memorabilia, baby dolls, modern dolls, entertainment dolls, foreign country and presidential dolls, and GI Joes plus trains and Hot Wheels.

}  Governor’s Residence, Harrisburg—The beautiful residence houses a collection of historical artifacts, period furnishings and reproductions plus artwork representative of PA’s rich heritage. Warm months offer the added pleasure of being able to enjoy the site’s gardens. Limited tour schedule.

}  Haines Shoe House, Hallam—Step inside this 48-foot giant shoe, commissioned by the owner of the Haines shoe sales empire as an advertising gimmick. Built in 1948 as a guest house, the site was offered complete with cook, maid, chauffeur and automobile to honeymooners from any town with a Haines shoe store. Amazingly roomy inside, this 25-foot high “shoe” has five different levels and contains three bedrooms, two baths, a kitchen and living room. This you’ve got to see!

}  Middletown & Hummelstown Railroad, Middletown—Board 1920 vintage passenger cars at the 1891 Middletown Station & Gift Shop for a trip through scenic Swatara Creek Valley. A live narration of history and folklore of the area highlight the trip. Ask about the former Canadian National steam locomotive #91 (a 2-6-0 built in 1910) that has been restored and is running on specific dates. Lunch and dinner options available. May through October.

}  Naylor’s Winery, York—Nestled among the rolling hills and lush green valleys of southern York County are 27 acres of beautiful vineyards. This is Naylor Wine Country where some of the state’s most rewarded and respected estate wines are grown, fermented, aged and bottled. Take part in a sampling, perhaps meet the wine maker, learn a secret or two, and browse through the wine shop.

}  Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat, Harrisburg—Enjoy a wonderful view of the Harrisburg skyline and the many islands that dot the Susquehanna River during a narrated cruise aboard the Pride. This paddleboat offers climate-controlled indoor seating with snack bar plus a partially canopied upper deck. A great vantage point to see the city, the Pride also offers options for lunch, dinner and ice cream socials. May through October.

}  Stauffer's Cookie Outlet, York—Filled with goodies including the original Animal Crackers and delicious ginger snaps, Stauffer’s offers samples as well as discounts in its outlet store. Begun in 1871 by David Stauffer, the son of a Mennonite minister, Stauffer’s has grown into a household name signifying quality snack products including not only cookies but also pretzels and nuts.

DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

}  Allenberry Playhouse, Boiling Springs—For over 50 years the Allenberry Playhouse has entertained guests at its unique setting along the Yellow Breeches Creek. Dazzling, exciting theatre productions performed by talented professional actors combined with buffet dining and wonderful service are sure to please! Meal and overnight options available.

}  Appalachian Brewing Company, Harrisburg—Harrisburg’s strong brewing tradition dating to the 1700’s is alive again thanks to ABC which opened in 1997. The brewery is set in a circa 1915 building, once home to a printing company and later the Harrisburg Passenger Railway Co , which has been restored and now proudly displays hardwood floors and ceilings, massive wood beams and antique brick walls as the backdrop to the company’s delicious brews. Visit for tours, samples and Brewmaster’s meals!

}  San Carlo’s Restaurant, York—This local landmark is housed in one of the oldest remodeled barns in the country is over 185 years old. You’ll admire not only the delicious fresh foods prepared at this establishment but also the hand-hewn wooden beams and pegged ceilings. The site also features adjacent “hop” bar complete with a ‘49 Dodge and other hot rods inside plus 30-foot penny bar.
